Preschool enrolment

There are a number of procedures and requirements for enrolment in a Department of Education preschool.

General guidelines

  • Department preschools enrol children for one year only, the year before they start school.
  • Children can enrol from the beginning of the school year if they turn four years of age on or before 31 July that year. Enrolment is offered in the following order:
  1. children living within the school's enrolment catchment area
  2. children living outside the school's enrolment catchment area and who have siblings enrolled in the school
  3. children living outside the school's enrolment catchment area
  • Offers of enrolment are made in keeping with the department's policy of targeting the most disadvantaged children in the local community
    • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children
    • children living in low socio-economic circumstances
    • children who are unable to access other early childhood services due to disadvantage or financial hardship.

Australia Street Infants School Preschool enrolment procedures

Placement into the Australia Street Infants preschool is extremely competitive and we consistently receive more applications for enrolment than available places for children.

Applications for Preschool 2024 will open at 8:30am on Monday 24 April 2023 (first day of Term 2). To apply you will need to fill in this Preschool waiting list application form:

This form must be completed and emailed to australist-p.school@det.nsw.edu.au from 8:30am on Monday 24 April 2023.

Please note that no early applications will be accepted.

To be considered for first round offers your form must be submitted by 3:30pm on Friday 28 July 2023. We will continue to accept applications after this date, however they will not be considered for first round offers. First round offers will be notified on Monday 14 August 2023.

The preschool follows eligibility criteria set out in the Department's preschool enrolment procedures. First priority is given to children who live within the school's local area. If the number of applicants exceeds the places available, the school's placement panel will consider each application and make recommendations for placement according to the department's eligibility criteria and priority.
